You can also read a bit more about my experience overcoming panic disorder and learning to live a life that is incredibly peaceful, calm, has strong resilience and is positive and happy.

I am now a super cool, calm and collected woman, but when I was younger, I suffered through years of debilitating panic attacks which left me anxious, in fear and eventually unable to leave the house due to agoraphobia. If you've ever had a panic attack, then I don't need to tell you how utterly terrifying they are, and back then they were not a topic that was understood or really discussed.

I was so grateful to be connected with a wonderful doctor who helped me understand what was happening and why. To sum it up easily, I was under an extreme amount of unmanaged stress that was exploding like a pressure cooker, causing these ongoing attacks to occur. Panic attacks can happen for a variety of reasons including stress, life changes and trauma for example, and if we don't begin to manage the stress it can become an intrusive part of your life.

We can't actually make a panic attack happen. It's a naturally occurring experience and once I sought help, I started on a life changing path that saw normality return for me. I learnt how to manage my stressors and became more resilient and able to cope, and this ability still remains. I also started to become happier.

We are living in a much different world where we are being stretched in many ways and along with that, we have the addition of social media, which isn't always having a good influence on our self-esteem, mental health or our overall happiness. I am really conscious of the affect of these things on me, so I make time to do what I can to keep things balanced and flowing with ease.

So how did I rid myself of panic attacks and learn to control my stress? Well, looking back now it seemed very simple and I believe it's achievable for others. There were a few things I needed to learn to do, and I hope these help you.

-
Seek medical help if your stress feels unmanageable. Support is there for you.
-
Look at what you can and can't control in life. For me, I began to focus on the things I could control and began to let go of what I couldn't control.
-
Be kind to yourself and learn to start working on living in the present.
-
Begin the practice of mindfulness. Learn to listen to your mind and body. I did a technique where I regularly stopped and paid attention to my body. If my shoulders where paying a visit to my ears, I knew I needed to take action. Drop those shoulders - it will make a big difference.
-
Now this is the major thing that assisted me on my journey to recovery. I had to learn to manage my stress and I did this through full body guided muscle relaxation.

Progressive Muscle Relaxation is a technique which focuses on relaxing all the muscles in our body in a step by step way using vocal guidance to assist. It can involve breathing or visualisation and it's a really pleasant relaxing experience.
This technique became the number one tool that helped me heal. It was asked to do this daily and sometimes I would do as needed - especially if I was feeling particularly panicked or anxious. Its benefits were profound and it took less than half an hour to do.

There are many relaxation tools available, but I keep coming back to the one that worked for me and I hope it helps you to begin a practice of learning to live a more calm and peaceful life.

I'd love to know how it goes for you, and look out for my upcoming live relaxation sessions. Details will be released soon.
